God and Compost

November 18, 2019 by Christine Leave a Comment

It’s now just passed mid-November and NaNoWriMo is over half way through!  I am pleased to say that just over 22,000 words had been penned at the halfway mark for this new novel that I am working on.  I had an idea for this novel as I outlined at the end of last month.  Although I have been working on this idea, I have not had any clear plans about a title for this novel.

As the story has been developing, Nate Jacobs, the male protagonist has developed into a science teacher at the local school.  He has a fascination with compost and a recurring them of discussing how God can create situations in your life that are similar to compost – nourishing and allowing things to grow – has developed.  And suddenly it seems to me that a title as simple (and unusual) as God and Compost may be fitting.

Although the title seems to aptly describe one of the recurring themes of conversation between the lead male and female in the story, I do question just what impression it would give readers as to the content of the book?  How can this be linked with a country, horse Christian romance?  I’m still working on that one.

A Third of the Way into NaNoWriMo

November 10, 2019 by Christine Leave a Comment

National Novel Writing Month is a third of the way through already! I am not on track for my aim of completing 50,000 words in the 30 days. This equates to 1,667 words per day and currently I’m just over a thousand words behind. But that’s ok! One day at a time and at the end of the day, a new horse romance novel is developing 🙂

At this point around 15,000 words have been penned and I’m excited to see how these characters will develop. The story follows single mother Beth Rogers as she moves back to the thoroughbred stud that she worked on as a young adult. Now, about a decade later she’s moved in to manage the property.

Alongside this she has to find a school for her five year old daughter. As she does, an unexpected attraction builds with one of the locals. This story will follow Beth as she rediscovers the passionate horse person she was as a single female and learns to keep this side of her alongside raising a young girl.

Another NanoWriMo and a New Horse Novel

October 26, 2019 by Christine Leave a Comment

Evening everyone! It’s time for another NanoWriMo and a new horse novel!

I have had a busy, busy few months and found little time – or ideas – for writing horse books.  And yet, I have been planning to take part in National Novel Writing Month (NanoWriMo) again this year.  Camp Nano in July I ended up around 5,000 words short of my 50,000 goal, but I made progress on four of my novels over this time.  I had also planned to proof read the ninth book in the Thoroughbred Breeders Series that was finished back in April, but didn’t get onto this.

And that finished novel still sits, awaiting a proof read and a cover design – hopefully I will achieve this before year’s end!

But I am excited to say that I’ve suddenly had motivation for a novel that I will plan to pen (type) over the month of November.  I received a text message today from a previous employer when I worked as a stud hand.

This employer was seeking a manager for the horse property and made the joking suggestion that perhaps I could come back to work and manage.  As someone with a husband, 3 children under 6 and a house that we own about an hour away, I questioned how that would be feasible.  And the response was that I could move into the house on the property whilst overseeing it.

Now as someone who has had the two best jobs in the world for my passions and skill sets – working as a stud hand and now teaching horse studies and developing online resources – this flippant suggestion made me smile and daydream a little.  And a short while later, the idea of developing a story where a single mother of a young child returns to manage the stud farm where she was first introduced to the horse industry had developed.  So that is my plan for November!  Stay tuned 🙂

Horses and a Testimony

September 9, 2019 by Christine Leave a Comment

Recently at church our pastor challenged us to consider how simple it is to tell our testimony.  He asked us to consider our response to statements similar to:

  1. Before Jesus I was…
  2. Then Jesus found me and I became…
  3. Because of Jesus my life’s purpose is…
  4. I am making disciples through…

Some people got up and shared their testimony; I thought about my responses.  I have always, always loved horses.  It has consistently been my dream to own land and have others keep their horses on my property.  In time, that dream only became clearer:

  1. Before Jesus I suffered anxiety and depression in spite of growing up in a loving, Christian home.
  2. At 16 I accepted Christ as my saviour but it wasn’t until 20 years of age that I got a revelation of what that truly meant; how incredible He is and overcame those negative issues and feelings.
  3. My horse property dream has become clearer: I want a property where I can raise my children with my husband, invest in the animals I love and to be a safe place where others can come, be embraced and learn about horses – and Christ.
  4. I am a teacher by trade.  I teach horse studies in an incredible job that combines my passions and skills of horses (I was a stud hand before teaching), writing, website design and teaching others about horses.  I find now unexpectedly that I have an opportunity to speak into teens and adults lives through my work as well as my writings as a horse book author.  I am sharing Christ with many people around the world – in America, the UK, Canada and Australia although the majority of them I don’t know personally.

I feel blessed to write about what I love, to share my faith and to even make a small amount of income from my horse books.  Although money isn’t the driving force, it is a nice bonus.

In light of my desire to share about my faith, my God and my love of horses, I recently had multiple days of free horse books that I have written.  If you didn’t get a chance to download any but are on Kindle Unlimited, why not check out my books?  All are free there!

Four Days of Freebies

August 18, 2019 by Christine Leave a Comment

Things have been quiet on the writing/publishing front of late and I wanted to bless readers with the chance to access some of my books for free.

I have the next Thoroughbred Breeders book complete – it just needs to be proofed and published, but is currently on the backburner until I find time to address this!  I also have a few other horse books in the works, but little time to focus on them currently.

So in light of that, I thought it would be nice to offer up four days of freebies!  The (six) books below will each be available for free download on Amazon Kindle over a two day period.  Why not grab yourself a copy?

August 20 / 21: Recessive (Thoroughbred Breeders #3)

August 21 / 22: Insular Trilogy (Unchurched, Blemished, Insular)

August 22 / 23: Free Reign (Free Rein #3)

August 23 / 24: B and B

The Thoroughbred Breeders series has main characters in their early twenties, working in the stud industry.  Insular focuses on characters in their mid-twenties and only features horses lightly; the Christian faith has the major focus.

The Free Rein series is aimed at 8-12 year olds and features young girls in their last years of primary school.  B and B is a standalone horse Christian novel for adults with the main characters in their thirties.  Enjoy!

And why not spread the word so that someone else can download any that may appeal to them? 🙂

12 Months Changes a Lot!

August 3, 2019 by Christine Leave a Comment

July was a busy, busy, busy month for me! I picked up full time work for the month on top of attempting a Camp Nano challenge of penning 50,000 words. Oh, and did I mention I have a husband and 3 kids under 5? 🙂

It is amazing to me how different taking part in Camp Nano for 2019 was to doing so for 2018.

In 2018 I set the audacious goal of penning 90,000 words – a trilogy known as Insular. It came down to the wire where the night of July 31 at about 10pm I was working hard to hit my goal as I knew I wouldn’t achieve it otherwise!

And ain’t that the truth! Not only was July 31 the last day of the month, but about an hour after penning the last words (just over 90,000, whoop!) my water’s broke and 5 hours later I had a newborn son. So there was no time to focus on completing that trilogy if I hadn’t hit the predetermined deadline!

Fast forward 12 months and I set a goal of 50,000 that I didn’t quite reach. But hey, 46,000 words across a few different novels I have in the works isn’t bad!

I had planned to also proof read the latest Thoroughbred Breeders’ book that I wrote back in Camp Nano in April but alas, that didn’t occur. Just such a busy month! I’m thankful my writing progressed but am trying to remember that I can’t always do all I aim to. And that is ok, things are progressing and that’s the most important. So stay tuned for future releases 🙂
