Before too long the three men were enjoying lunch. Craig was still surprised by his workmates choosing to have something hot to eat on such a hot day. Mentally shrugging it off, he enjoyed the rest of his salad sandwich. When his gaze focused back on Jay, he was surprised to find an amused smirk covering his features. Finishing his sandwich he raised his brows in question.
“What are you smirking about?” he finally asked.
Jay shrugged.
“I was just thinking…”
“Spit it out,” Craig said with a grin, knowing he was about to be ribbed for something.
“Oh, it’s just that today seemed a pretty convenient distraction for you. Great that you got to focus on a complicated trimming job to keep you occupied.”
“And why would I need distracting?” Craig asked with a grin, certain Jay was talking about the sales and Savannah.
“Oh I don’t know… maybe because a certain young woman will be away for the next week and a half?” he suggested brazenly.
“Katie?” Craig asked innocently, pleased when Rick choked on his drink.
Jay laughed and threw a chip at him.
“Nice. You know I wasn’t talking about Katie.”
“Of course not; that brunette is all yours,” Craig teased, noting with a smile that Jay had the decency to blush.
“I think I need to change the topic before all of this banter results in a fist fight,” Rick declared, standing up.
Craig laughed.
“I don’t tend to rise to the bait,” he commented, taken aback when Rick burst out laughing.
“What did I say?” Craig asked in surprise, standing beside his boss.
“Oh, nothing. It just seems… from what Flynn tells me, you’re pretty handy with those fists!”
Craig felt himself flush as he thought back to the classmate at TAFE whom he had punched. He refrained from defending his actions to his boss. Whatever Flynn had said, Craig had only hit him to save Flynn from a thorough beating.
“I don’t make a habit of it,” he said simply as he took a sip of his drink, earning a nod from Rick in return.
The three men headed back to their cars. Craig took a long swig from his bottle of juice.
“I believe you, mate. In fact, Flynn said as much himself. He was telling me the other week that it was his duty to be the gentleman and bow out from trying to win Savannah’s affections. And all because you’d saved him from getting hurt at that TAFE facility of yours by decking another fella that was giving him a beating.”
It was Craig’s turn to choke on his drink.
“He said what?” he asked, incredulous.
Rick laughed and nodded as he opened the car door and got into the driver’s seat.
“Just what I said, mate. Flynn was backing off from Savannah so that you could have a chance. It was the right thing to do, considering you’d helped him stand up to that hot shot Rob when he’d been bad mouthing Savannah.”
Craig pulled the passenger door closed beside him and did up his seat belt. He wasn’t sure how to respond to that. In the end, he concluded it was best to just be thankful that Flynn was backing off from Savannah – whatever the reason he put forward. He had a sneaking suspicion that it had something to do with the fact that she’d told him in no uncertain terms that she wasn’t going to go out with him.
At the end of the day, it didn’t matter. Flynn appeared to be out of the picture and he was more than happy to be able to focus on Savannah without another male vying for her interest. He turned his attention back to Rick and grinned.
“Well, all I can say to that is that I’m glad Flynn has decided to be a gentleman.”
Rick roared with laughter as he pulled out of his parking spot and headed back out of town. They had two more farms to visit before they were done for the day.
