From the bright barren land outside, Cynthia found it difficult to see much inside the stables. She was aware of a broad figure walking toward them and found herself quickly concluding that if this Tommy fella was taller, he wouldn’t look so incredibly stocky. She thought with a grin that the horses wouldn’t want to take on this tank of a man.
As Tommy approached, Cynthia found herself questioning how old he was. He seemed a lot younger than she was expecting. And yet, he seemed older than her. Was he in his twenties? Or older?
His gaze travelled from John to Cynthia and back to John. She thought she saw his mouth twitch as if to smile but then it was gone and his serious gaze seemed so stern.
“So you’re the new girl, huh?” he asked, his gaze flicking to her.
She nodded, trying not to show that she was uncertain. She stepped forward and held out her hand, pleased when Tommy took it to shake.
“I’m Cynthia.”
“Tommy. I thought you would be older.”
His comment was simple, unassuming and she couldn’t help but smile.
“Same here,” she quipped, noting a quick smirk from him.
“How old?” he questioned, a challenge in his tone as his arms folded across his expansive chest.
Cynthia drew her eyes away from his strong forearms and met his gaze, holding her chin high. She shrugged.
“I don’t know… old enough to have a wife, kids maybe.”
She cringed at the way it sounded like a question. Tommy was grinning now and she found herself fascinated by a dimple that sat in his left cheek.
“And who’s to say I’m not?”
She felt her face flush and prayed that in the darker stables it wouldn’t be noticeable. She glanced at John and noted his amused smile.
“Cut it out, Tommy boy. Cynthia has just gotten here and she wanted to see the horses first. Don’t give her the impression that everyone here is going to give her a hard time.”
Cynthia was thankful for the older man’s comment. She wasn’t sure if Tommy was usually argumentative or giving her a hard time because she was new… or female… or young. Just how old was he?
