By three o’clock that afternoon many of the local stud workers had finished on their properties and made their way around to Nev’s.
Savannah was glad her circle of friends were about to keep her company. It meant she had a safe cocoon of people to hide within at the party. It also meant that she had a group of friends who expected her to top up their drinks.
Savannah thanked Kathy with a smile before turning around to head out of the house. She paused, suddenly finding herself facing a broad chest. A familiar flurry of butterflies started in her stomach as she looked up at the man she knew it would be.
“Craig,” she breathed out, gripping the cans in her hand and trying to not drop them as she threatened to overbalance.
“Savannah,” Craig acknowledged her with a small smile as he reached out a hand to steady her.
Savannah felt the hairs rise on the back of her arm at his touch. She quickly dropped her gaze to the ground.
“Do you need a hand with those cans?” he asked.
She shook her head quickly and stepped around him, hoping he didn’t think they were all for her. None of them are.
She headed out of Nev’s house to her friends who were waiting for their drinks. The evening was a beautiful one, warm outside but cooling down as time passed. Some people had been around since about half past two that afternoon, in time to watch the Melbourne Cup.
Savannah had given up hope that the farrier men would be coming as it got later into the afternoon. She thought about this as she headed back out to her girlfriends.
Sarah, Katie and Jackie had each come along after work. Jackie’s boyfriend Peter was also there, happily sitting with the girls and chattering about stud work. Savannah handed each of them a can. Peter smiled his thanks before whispering to her.
“Behind you.”
Savannah straightened slowly, not sure she wanted to look around. Peter was kept up to date on Savannah’s issues with Flynn through his girlfriend. Savannah was thankful to find one male who was on her side, rather than joining in with the many who teased her about it.
Of course if Craig is here, Flynn will be here.
Savannah sighed with relief when the foaling alarm pager went off in her pocket.
“Looks like I need to go check the mares,” she said cheerfully, eager for a chance to escape.
“Hi everyone!” Flynn’s eager voice broke into the group, “I’ll join you, if you like Savannah.”
Savannah glared at Sarah who was hiding a smirk behind her hand. Not knowing what else to do, Savannah reached out and grabbed Katie’s arm.
“You’re welcome to join us, Flynn,” she said as politely as she could.
Katie smirked as she got to her feet and walked with Savannah. Flynn followed the pair as they headed away from the house and over to the foaling yards. It was a false alarm and quickly the three were headed back to everyone else.
Savannah was relieved that Flynn hadn’t tried to engage her in conversation. She’d been surprised that Katie hadn’t missed out on the opportunity to flirt with another male.
If it gets his attention away from me, I must thank Katie.
