Ella knocked on the door to Eli’s living quarters, curious about what was inside. She had seen them when they were built but knew that someone living in a place could give it a very different look and feel.
“Come on in, Tony!”
She frowned at the reply. Not sure I should just walk in when I’m not who he’s expecting. She sighed and knocked again.
“It’s unlocked!” his voice responded loudly.
Ella shrugged and opened the door, making her way inside slowly. She paused in the doorway as she spied Eli standing in the middle of the living area, a towel slung over his bare shoulder, board shorts covering the lower half of his figure.
His face lit up with a smile as he spied her and she felt her stomach jump.
That’s new.
“Sorry, I’m not Tony and didn’t want to assume I could just waltz in…”
Eli laughed, bending over to put the towel in a backpack and slinging it onto his back. Ella felt strangely self conscious at his half naked form.
“The whole time that we’ve known each other La, any time you came over to visit you waltzed in like you owned the place. What’s changed?”
She smiled at the use of his childhood nickname for her; he’d taken to calling her that when he couldn’t say Ella and it had stuck for many years. She met his gaze and found him grinning, but looking at her intently.
She shrugged and sighed, giving him a sheepish grin.
“I guess the whole being in Melbourne thing and not seeing you so often…”
He nodded slowly, glancing outside as he spoke.
“We were best friends, Ella.”
She was surprised at the tone of his voice. Was it disappointment? Or sadness?
“And we’re not anymore?” she questioned curiously.
He met her gaze quickly, his lips quirking into a half grin.
“Best friends spend a lot of time together. What are you doing tomorrow afternoon? Come on a ride with me? You haven’t really told me much about your degree and how you’re finding it. I miss you, Ella.”
She smiled at the statement and nodded.
“Let’s go on a ride. Maybe I can ride Jack this time,” she suggested in a teasing tone.
Eli’s eyes rounded in surprise and he gave her a grin as he headed toward the door that she had recently come in.
“I thought you’d want to win on Kalli again?” he challenged.
She shrugged as he reached the doorway, opened it wide and stood looking at her.
“If I win on both horses then it’ll prove I’m the better rider, won’t it?” she joked, causing him to chuckle.
