Job 8:7 – ‘Your beginning will seem so small, since your future will flourish.’
One of the best things we can do for the next generation is starting them on firm ground. Raise up your children to know about God and to have a relationship with him. Help them to get established in the Word and to know the importance of living life for him.
From here, you can give them the best possible financial start to life, too. Firstly, as parents – and grandparents – we can do this by not leaving any debts that they will need to cover. Work to have your mortgage paid in full, no credit card debt and no personal loans that still need paying.
Pass on a home for them to live in or to be able to sell and reap finances from, but don’t leave them with debt you didn’t manage to pay off entirely. Give them assets, not liabilities.
On top of this, spend your lifetime teaching them how to be good stewards of what they’re blessed with. Chances are you worked hard for your house! Just because they are receiving a generous financial gift or asset from you doesn’t mean they should take it for granted and squander it away. Instead, it should be a stepping stone to help them invest and generate more for future generations that they will go on to provide for and teach about God and money.
As you teach them what you know, they can then start ahead of you and do greater things. Likewise, they can greatly impact their children for the better and that generation will start out even further ahead! Aim to leave a legacy for your children and their children, not debt and financial struggles.
It is my prayer for you:
- That you will recognise how you live your life affects your children and their children; do it wisely.
- That you will be able to square off any debt acquired in your lifetime and leave something valuable for your children.
- That you will have children who will know and love the Lord and seek to be generous with their finances, too.
Today’s prayer:
Lord I thank you that you have blessed me – your child – with so much. Help me to do the same for my children on this earth, and their children. Help me to recognise that the greatest legacy I can leave for them is knowledge of You.
