I’ve touched on this being a niche area in the horse book world, but realised I should be putting together a post to point you toward other writers that combine these two aspects in their stories!  So let’s take a look at some Horse Books by Christian Authors or those that highlight God in them alongside horses.

The ones below may be standalone novels where the features of Christianity and/or horses don’t apply in other books by the same author.  But there are some that are a series with these two aspects continuing throughout.

1. Lauraine Snelling is perhaps the first author I became aware of who combines her Christian faith with horses.  Be sure to check out the High Hurdles and Golden Filly series.  She has plenty of other Christian novels that feature horses in them, though the equine aspect isn’t always as strong.
2. Mark Littleton – I have a read a book by Mark titled Tracks in the Sand.
3. Cara Whitney – recently I was made aware of a devotional that featured horses titled Unbridled Faith.  I am sure it is worth checking out!
4. Lynn Baber has a Christian non fiction book that ties in lessons she’s learned with her horses and how these can relate to her faith.  It’s titled Amazing Grays, Amazing Grace.
5. Nancy Rue – Horse Crazy Lily is a book for early teens that features horses and the Christian faith.
6. Vicki Watson – Rosie and Scamper is perfect for the middle grade reader and features the Christian faith and horses heavily.
7. Tamera Alexander – To Win Her Favor is an adult book with a big focus on horses – racehorses in particular – and the Christian faith.  I have read this novel numerous times and enjoy it immensely.
8. Esther Weaver – The Amish Horse Whisperer is a quick and easy read with a focus on horses and God 🙂
9. Ann Hunter has written the North Oak Series for teens.  I have read the first three books in this series and loved the God focus in the first; though felt it waned in the following.  That said, I haven’t read future books and so cannot say if this picks up again.
10. Liz Isaacson – Third Time’s a Charm is a Christian romance for adults featuring horses.

So here’s 10 different authors covering younger readers, older readers, fiction and non fiction.  And they are all with a Christian/God and horse aspect!  If you want to check out all the books along this theme that I have come across, you may like to follow my Christian Horse Books board on Pinterest.

Whether it’s unicorns, a Pegasus or supernatural horses that are able to communicate with people, fantasy horse books can be a great read.  Although the fantasy horse books I have read are in the minority when compared with the other types of books I read, there seem to be a lot out there!  So let’s take a look at 19 Fantasy Books that Feature Horses.

Many of these I haven’t read yet, but I have had suggested to me as fitting under this category.  Perhaps you’ll discover some great new reads – and authors! 😉

• I have really enjoyed reading a couple by Angelia Almos that I downloaded for free on Amazon at different times.  They included Unicorn Keep and Horse Charmer.  These would appeal to teens and adult alike.
• Angela Dorsey has a great tale for teens in Winter of the Crystal Dances.
• Roz Marshall has a unique tale in Unicorn Magic.
• Karen Myers has a 4-book fantasy that is apparently “set in an otherworld version of the Virginia Blue Ridge, with a foxhunting hero (and plenty of horses).”  You can check it out at https://karenmyersauthor.com/books-and-series/the-hounds-of-annwn/
• Angharad Thompson Rees has a six book set of pony stories for children that feature many magical aspects.  (Adults are sure to enjoy them, too ;))  Witch Hearts by Angharad Thompson Rees is also due to be released this month; why not be one of the first to grab a copy?
• The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater sounds like a unique tale.
• Beside Me by Carolyn Henderson has a supernatural thread that runs through the story.
• Dun Lady’s Jess by Doranna Durgin is one I have yet to read but have loaded on my Kindle!
• Titans by Victoria Scott

I feel that the area of Christian horse books is a niche area, but there are definitely other authors that address these two aspects in their books.  I loved reading (and still enjoy!) books by Lauraine Snelling that feature horses.  That said, I enjoy other books of hers too, even if horses are only mentioned within the story.  Now onto future horse books I am working on!

I have a few other book ideas that I’ve been sitting on for awhile that I hope to write and release in the near future, but horses won’t be the feature point for one of these books.  I am still writing the Free Rein series and Thoroughbred Breeders and even have a follow up story from B and B that is half written!

Future Horse Books

I have recently been toying with the idea of writing a children’s series that focuses on the fruit of the Holy Spirit.  This will be explored with the help of a horse element, but I hope to write all of these books (aimed at primary aged children) and then release them consecutively over a number of months.  Stay tuned for news on this!  I know once I prioritise time for this project and buckle down to write, it won’t take me long to get caught up in the project – and hopefully complete it in a short timeframe!

I have also started a Christian story for adults.  It will explore three different classes of people within society and how man made rules and preconceived ideas can result in a very unjust world!  So perhaps a little deeper than I usually write, but I promise there’ll be romance involved, too 😉  I am not yet sure if this will be one novel or built into a trilogy.

So there’s a peek into some writing projects that I have started or am thinking about.  Some of these I plan to bring to fruition in 2018, so stay tuned!

Perhaps you love to read horse books of all kinds.  Or maybe you have some young horse fans in your family – middle grade horse books are often full of adventure as well as educational tips with regards to keeping horses and ponies.

I have recently finished writing the seventh book in the Thoroughbred Breeders series to be titled Grace.  It has become a practice for me to finish a book, ignore it for 2 weeks and then to reread it.  I create my books, design their covers (except for my debut novel Horse Country, though I took the photo on the cover) and I edit my books before self publishing.

A lot, huh?  Perhaps this seems like a control issue.  Or maybe it seems a lack of delegating ability!  At the end of the day, my books, their look and content all comes down to me.  And I’m ok with this.  But at times, I find it a struggle to determine what to prioritise first.

For example, now at the end of March I have just finished a book (2 weeks ago, so it’s due for a reread and edit).  I am in the middle of 2 other books that are half and three quarters done.  I also have other blogs to stay on top of and other writing gigs I take part in.  A lot is going on – and I love it this way!

But on a (rare) evening where I have time to relax and write, I am questioning my first priority.

Is it to work on one of the two novels that I hope to finish at the end of April?  Or is it to edit my recently finished book?

I have opted for the second.  At the end of the day as an author, it’s great to write whenever you can!  But, if you have a book that is complete but requires something else from you before it’s available to your readers, work on this!  Once your book is published, at least you know it’s up there for others to discover and enjoy.  Then you can continue with your next great masterpiece.

I would go so far as to say writing the story is the most time involving aspect.  But don’t forget all the other bits that allow your book to be put on a publishing platform before your readers.  They’re just as important to the end result.  Stay tuned for news of Grace available for purchase in the near future!  You can choose to follow me on Amazon to be notified of new releases or sign up to my author list (top right of this site).
