“So I uh… got some weekend work at a thoroughbred stud recently.”
Jessica glanced up as James came toward her at the lunch table. She gave him a broad smile.
“Really? That’s super cool! So have you started yet?”
James nodded as he sat down opposite her.
“Yeah, over this weekend just past. It was really cool! The property is a boutique stud and I think this will be a great way for me to get an overall view of the horse breeding industry.”
“And hopefully some contacts, particularly a farrier?” Jessica asked with a smile, causing him to nod again.
“Too right! I’m only working Saturdays, so I guess meeting their farrier isn’t so likely on a weekend…”
Jessica nodded quickly.
“Sure, like I told you, we have farrier days. Tuesday or Thursday normally, each week. It may be different on a smaller stud, but over the weekend we tend to have half the amount of staff and minimise what needs to be done on a Saturday or Sunday. The only reason a farrier would be coming out, would be for a foot emergency.”
James nodded slowly, trying not to feel disappointed. The job had started really well. He was so happy to have acquired some work locally and it didn’t all have to be about finding a contact that may help him to establish a farrier apprenticeship.
“So… if you don’t find out who their farrier is and get to make contact with him – or her,” Jessica said, causing James to look up at her in surprise.
“Girls can be farriers, too! Not as common, but I know of a couple. I know of some equine dentists that are women, too for the record. Anyway, if you don’t have a lead to go on within the next month, let me know and I’ll introduce you to our farrier,” Jessica continued, causing him to assess her keenly.
A pleased smile made it’s way across his face.
“Really?”
“Honestly.”
“Awesome! So… to be able to do that, it may be beneficial to have my number, huh?” James asked with a grin.
Jessica rolled her eyes but nodded. She pulled her phone out of her back pocket and slid it across the table.
“Yeah, it might smarty. Go on, put your digits in there and I can pass on some contact details if you don’t get any through your new job. Congratulations, by the way.”
“Thanks. I was pleased they responded so quickly to my email inquiring about work.”
Jessica forced herself to not respond. James had also contacted them and her parents hadn’t followed it up.
It wasn’t her fault or doing, but she wasn’t sure she wanted James to know he’d contacted her family’s farm… though in time he would know, wouldn’t he? There were only so many studs in the area and he already knew she lived on one.
James didn’t seem to notice as he entered his name and number into her phone. Jessica reached for it as he handed it over, his hand brushing against hers. She could feel herself growing warm as she nodded at him.
“Ta. I’m sure you’ll get some details from your current workplace, but just in case,” she said with a grin.
James laughed and nodded.
